Paarl builds in three different shapes, and each one plumbs differently. There are the new homes going up on the Winelands estates, like Boschenmeer and Val de Vie, which we plumb straight off the architect’s plans as the walls rise. There are the older freestanding homes in suburbs like Lemoenkloof and Klein Parys, where the work is usually an extension or a second bathroom tied into existing pipework. And there are the farm cottages and smallholdings out towards Windmeul and Simondium, where the supply might run off a tank or a borehole rather than a street connection.
Since the 2017–18 Day Zero drought, plenty of Paarl homeowners ask us to build water security in from the start: a JoJo tank with a pump so the house keeps running when the municipal supply drops, or a borehole or well-point connection for the garden and beyond. Both are worth doing properly, and a borehole or well-point tie-in isn’t only a plumbing job. The Drakenstein Local Municipality by-law requires a meter on that connection, and we install it so the setup is compliant from day one.
On every one of these the method is the same. We size the geyser, solar or heat pump to the house rather than guessing, work the pipework in around the builder’s programme so nobody is held up, and pressure-test every run to standard before it’s closed up. When we leave, the site is tidy and the plumbing is laid out to be easy to live with and easy to get back to later.
