Pearl Valley sits on the Berg River between Paarl and Franschhoek and was built almost entirely this century, which means the geyser work here is rarely a rescue job. There is no thirty-year-old cylinder on a rotten platform in a roof void, which is what half of old-town Paarl calls us about. What we are usually doing instead is one of three things: replacing a first-generation unit that has reached the end of its life, changing the technology because somebody wants the electricity bill down, or first-fitting hot water on a renovation. None of those are emergencies, which means they are worth doing properly rather than quickly.
Two things decide whether an estate installation goes smoothly, and neither of them is the geyser. The first is where the equipment is allowed to go. A solar collector, a heat pump or a gas flue all have to live somewhere visible, and an estate of this kind has architectural guidelines about what may be fixed to a roof or an external wall. That question is far cheaper to settle before a unit is ordered than on the morning it arrives, so we will tell you what the installation physically needs and where it would have to sit, in a form you can put to the estate. The second is the overflow. In a double-storey home with the cylinder upstairs, a drip tray whose overflow discharges somewhere nobody ever looks is not a safety device, it is a slow ceiling repair waiting to happen. We route it where a running overflow will be seen.
And then there is the paperwork, which on an estate matters more than it does elsewhere. Gas water heating is common here, and a fixed LPG installation legally has to be carried out by a registered gas practitioner and carry a Certificate of Conformity. Nobody thinks about that document until an insurer asks for it after a fire, or a conveyancer asks for it on a sale, or the estate runs an audit. We issue the CoC on the day and leave it with you for your file. The same goes for the rest of it: everything we install here is signed off, and the certificates go to you rather than into a drawer of ours. Yes. Gas water heating is common on the estate, and a fixed LPG installation has to be done by a registered gas practitioner to SANS 10087-1 and carry a Certificate of Conformity when it is finished. We size the unit to the number of bathrooms rather than to whatever was on the shelf, run and pressure-test the gas line, set up the cylinder bay with the ventilation and separation distances it needs, and hand over the CoC on the day so it goes straight onto your file. It depends on what the house already has and what you are trying to fix. A straight electric replacement is the cheapest to install and the most expensive to run. A heat pump is the usual choice when someone wants the running cost down without anything going on the roof, because the unit sits at ground level. Solar saves the most over time but needs roof space and the right orientation. Gas suits households that want instant hot water and already have LPG on site. We will tell you which of those actually fits your house rather than which one we would rather sell.

Yes. A burst geyser in a double-storey estate home does real damage fast, so the first job is isolating it and stopping the water, then getting a replacement in. We are based in Paarl, a short run down the R301, so this is not a long trip for us. Where the damage is going through an insurance claim we will document what failed with photographs and provide the certificates for the new installation, which is generally what the assessor asks for.
We book contractor access at the gate before we arrive and keep the work inside the hours the estate permits, so it is not something you have to arrange. If you are away or the house is let, we will work to an absent owner and send photographs of what was done along with the certificates, which is routine for us on this estate rather than a special arrangement.
